In the eastern shadows of Three Mile Island Unit 2 a 20 by 25 foot concrete foundation awaits a processed water evaporator designed to distill and evaporate 2.3 million gallons of radioactive water.
Ten years after the worst US nuclear accident GPU Nuclear still fights to dispose of radioactive debris including high and low level waste. Evaporation of cooling water would release 1020 curies of tritium, drawing opposition from TMI Alert while NRC approves the plan. Debate centers on on site storage versus evaporation and potential environmental impact.
A car with failed brakes struck a decorative brick wall at Devido Memorial Park at East Washington and Water streets, causing about 7000 in damage. Ronald G. Teutenberg, 29, fled but was arrested and charged with hit and run and related offenses. The wall and sidewalk will be rebuilt by C&G Construction, delaying planned benches. The park,dedicated in 1988 to Marianne Devido, cost 32000 to build.
In Harrisburg anti-nuclear activists gathered before dawn to mark the TMI near meltdown anniversary. Eight protesters lit candles at 4 a.m. at the plant gate while others expressed faith in safe operation. Former NRC member James Asselstine cited a 1987 NRC study predicting a 12 to 45 percent chance of another TMI-like accident in the next 20 years.
Neshannock Township supervisors and their solicitor and engineers review how much the township should pay for monitoring sewer mains feeding New Castle. Mayor Christofer proposed about 40 000 from Neshannock and 19 958 from Union Township to cover a 59 000 cost. The board seeks a lawful share without overcommitting taxpayers and aims to resolve within a week.
Exxon admits cleanup of the Valdez spill is not proceeding well as the U S Bush administration dispatches three top officials to Valdez Alaska to review efforts. Frank Sarossi says recovery of spilled oil is hampered by high winds and shifting slicks while Coast Guard and EPA officials monitor the response.
