Chinese reinforcements arrived near Toungoo as British and Chinese troops improved Burma defense by coordinating two parallel lines. The town remains under heavy attack with Japanese forces pressing to cut the road to Prome, and fighting has intensified since last Sunday.
A London Evening Star dispatch from Sydney reports heavy US Asiatic fleet submarines have sunk 36 Japanese warships transports and supply ships in under three weeks. The tally includes one aircraft carrier five destroyers and 30 transports or supply ships. Damaged ships raise the total sunk or damaged to 72 as other UN submarines also operate.
G N C A appointed teams aim to raise 35000 for final release of the steel mill property. They report 28000 on hand with 7000 more advanced. a 30000 check is ready for J M Dietch, former owner, plus a 5000 check already given. Teams expect to raise the remaining 7000 to repay the advance.

American Filipino marksmen on Corregidor Island claim at least 25 heavy Japanese bombers shot down since the Philippine conflict began. Anti aircraft batteries report additional losses in December and January, with further enemy planes damaged.
Several more grass fires were reported Friday by city firemen. Three calls came from Etna street at 4 30 and 10 25 oclock and one from Big Run street at 6 05 p m. Firemen were also called to 1307 Moravia street earlier when a short in the wiring of an auto owned by Jacob Goling caused $10 damage.
British forces launched a combined land sea and air raid on St Nazaire in the early hours, aiming to bottle up the German U boat base. The operation involved units from all three services with further communiques promised on return.
Alfred Joel Buzzard of Pittsburgh was found dead in a Butler hotel room. Coroner J Charles Dengler ruled the death a self inflicted gunshot. Buzzard registered at the hotel early Thursday and was discovered after he failed to appear Friday.

A blast at the Unexcelled Manufacturing Co. plant in Graniteville Staten Island killed three workers and critically injured three others. The explosion occurred in the explosive mixing room as thermite bombs were being made, demolishing a one story brick building and driving victims through the roof. Firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to nearby structures.
Neshannock Post 315 of the VFW and The News will distribute white cardboard service star emblems to families with men in the armed forces. Miss Hazel Cummins will hand them out starting 9 AM Monday at The News lobby. emblems use color codes for Army Navy Marine Corps and overseas service, with silver for outside the continental U S and gold for the supreme sacrifice. Emblems are not for children.
Japanese bombers unleash a fierce and prolonged attack on Corregidor island as American batteries continue to lead Manila Bay defenses. General McWainwright says Corregidor holds out after sixteen weeks of Pacific warfare while General Tomoyuki presses to raise the Rising Sun on the fort.
