In Richmond Virginia UPI reports Columbia Gas Transmission Corp a major supplier across several states is accused by Senator Howard Metzenbaum of worsening this winter s gas shortage by early sale of reserves. The company serves Pennsylvania West Virginia Maryland Kentucky DC southern New York Ohio and Virginia. The shortages left millions idle during the severe cold.

Allegheny County man Richard Panza 47 won a tax dispute with Harmar Township officials after a judge ruled he suffered a loss not a profit from 972 to 1978. Panza faced fines and a jail threat for failing to pay 51 in local wage taxes though he had offered to pay with a seven pound pig named Sarah. He was jailed briefly then released on a court order from Criminal Division Administrative Supervisor Samuel Strays.

County bridge on Pa. 168 to close for repairs
The bridge carrying Pa. 168 over Beaver River between West Pillsburg and Moravia will shut for about a month starting April. PennDOT says seven steel beams will be reinforced and decking replaced with minor concrete work on the pier. The seven ton limit will be removed after completion. detour will use Pa. 166 north to the Viaduct in New Castle then Pa. 18 to Moravia. Contract awarded to Coon Welding and Machine Co. at a cost of 56,285 state financed.

President Carter appointed former Congresswoman Bella Abzug of New York to chair the National Commission on Observance of Women's Year. A panel of about 40 members will hold conferences in 55 states and territories by mid July to push for eliminating barriers to women's equality.
