WASHINGTON Friday nominat ed J. Beverly Carter a diplomat who reportedly damaged his career by helping ransom American hostages in Africa to be ambassador to Liberia. Carter, a black Philadelphian, previously served as ambassador to Tanzania in May 1975 during a terrorist incident. The nomination follows a year of controversy over his behind the scenes actions and a shift from a potential Denmark posting. If confirmed he would succeed Melvin Mantill and has served as special assistant to the African affairs chief. He is married with three children and studied at Lincoln University.

Two people were hospitalized after their car left Shenango Road and split in half. A following car collided with wreckage. Elderly woman sentenced for scalding death in Pennsylvania
In Meadville Pennsylvania 71 year old May Margaret Murphy Jones was sentenced to 3 to 10 years in state prison for throwing scalding water on 53 year old Margaret Murphy a border at her home in November 1974. Man Assaults Judge In Court Outburst

Robert A. Peterson Jr 53 was sentenced to four years after pleading no contest to furnishing false medical diagnoses and prescribing treatment by rail. The case began with a 1973 report of a patient treated by mail, with postal inspectors finding Peterson used psychic notes based on dried blood vibrations.
Fondy says Pittspurga teachers drop appeal over fines
