Commonwealth seeks removal of Supreme Court Justice George W. Maxey from Fayette County third degree cases after he directed acquittal of State Trooper Anthony Saiute in the Monaghan killing. Possible paths include recall by the high court, impeachment, or removal by Governor on two thirds legislative vote. Justice Maxey’s decisive ruling prompted immediate adjournment and a pending April 19 court resumption.
Erie Pa March 17 Stanley B Benton note teller first of 11 defendants in a 1 300 000 shortage in the closed Commercial National Bank of Bradford was found guilty on four counts in a sealed verdict returned by a federal jury. The Benton case verdict opened by Federal Judge Br M Gibson as Hazel A Benson a discount clerk went on trial second defendant to face a jury. False Entries Benson charged with making false entries totaling 4 565 in an indictment of five counts. The fifth count charging he entered a false trial balance was dropped by Judge Gibson. Miss Benson is being tried on 30 counts of an indictment charging false entries. In charging the jury Judge Gibson ordered verdict not guilty on the fifth count of the bill involving a false entry.
Harrisburg March 17. The senate approved the Simon Resolution after a 23 to 12 vote paving the way for a referendum on a graded personal income tax for Pennsylvanians. The measure, sponsored by Rep. Joseph A. Simon, now goes to the governor.
Tyrone Power and Sonja Henie, two film stars linked romantically, were reportedly involved in a one day strike at a Detroit hotel. They stayed in high rooms at Book-Gadilac hotel and were seen walking through stained corridors during the disruption.
