New York March 12 Representatives of striking building service employees and realty interests ended an all night peace conference at 5 AM with no agreement. Spokesmen said talks would resume at 3 PM and there was hope the strike would end. Mayor La Guardia said two major peace partners were broken down and one obstacle remained, as he left for Washington to meet at the White House. The obstacle was believed to be demand that replacements kept on the job.
Giuseppe Big Mike Spinelli of Pittsburgh Florida appealed to Italy's Supreme Court for reversal of a 30 year sentence handed at Salerno last December for the murder of the Volpe brothers, Pittsburgh bootleggers. Convicted as an Italian citizen, he fled to Salerno and was tried there. the appeal will be heard in Rome next month.
The United States government will refuse to join economic or financial sanctions against Germany at the urging of France. The State Department adopts a hands off policy in the European war crisis sparked by Germany’s occupation of the Rhine. The U S participated in Versailles treaty discussions but now seeks no part in what is viewed as a European problem.
Flood waters rose rapidly as the Susquehanna and tributaries inundated North and South Towanda causing evacuations by boat. A 300-foot section of railroad right of way was washed out and Towanda airport submerged. Rescue operations saved two bedridden residents including an expectant mother.
In New Hampshire three avalanches loosened by rain swept the White Mountains causing widespread damage. Debris buried Crawford Notch Tucker man’s Ravine and Silver Cascades under heavy dirt and ice while northern lowlands flooded, isolating the White Mountain district and blocking roads. Highway crews worked to free frozen culverts and clear passages.
Mrs. Andrew G. Pierce of New Bedford Massachusetts filed a suit seeking $40,000, alleging her husband promised to repay loans she made to him and that he failed to reimburse her. The case labels him as a scion of an old New England family.
Beaver Pa March 12 Escaping the electric chair youthful Steve Marenkovich Center township faced 10 to 20 years imprisonment after a second degree murder verdict for killing his stepmother Katie Marenkovich 37. A nine man three woman jury deliberated six hours. Judge Henry S Wilson cautioned against a first degree murder verdict carrying death. The youth 20 showed little emotion.
The New Castle Senior High basketball team won the WPIAL Class A championship. The school board passed a resolution of appreciation at the Wednesday meeting, presented by Director J Herbert McIlvenny, praising sportsmanship and resolve. Another resolution thanked the New Castle News for its support.
James McGinnis 47, a coal mine machinist, surrendered in Hazelwood after a manhunt spanning three states for slaying Grace Gillespie, 18, in her Avella home. He admitted the crime, staged to see grandchildren Mar Jene and Ronald, and was taken to Washington, saying I don’t know why I did it.
Co. F. Ward regional director of the personal property tax bureau announced a 15 day extension for filing state tax returns. The new deadline is March 31, replacing the previous March 15 date. Ward, a resident of Ellwood City, now heads a region covering eight Pennsylvania counties within one of thirteen districts.
The school board approved but not formally adopted the budget for 1936-37 and made it ready for public inspection at the administration building. The millage for the coming year stays at fifteen, to be secured by a loan up to $190,000 and refunding $60,000 in bonds. Delinquent tax collection exceeds expectations, shrinking the current-year deficit from an estimated $130,000 to about $40,000. formal adoption will occur at the April meeting.
Baroness Maud von Thyssen seeks 400000 dollars in a Berlin court from the Mdivani heirs for injuries she suffered and the missing jewels after a crash that killed Prince Alexis Mdivani. She filed the suit while still hospitalized as Baron von Thyssen also sued for divorce naming the deceased prince as co respondent.

Thelma Downey Stewart, 26, a Pittsburgh area resident, shot herself in a local hotel after a brief marriage to Dr. Wayne H. Stewart of Coraopolis. A coroner’s report cites marital trouble as motive. She left notes to relatives and hotel staff, and her body was to be buried beside Grandmother Downey if possible.
