United Press International notes Rep. Richard Cheney of Wyoming, long connected to Washington power, is nominated by President Bush for defense secretary after Senate rejected John Tower. Cheney earns praise from Republicans and Democrats for readiness, with leaders calling him capable and superbly qualified.

South Side plans 82-bed facility with aided care unit

Allied Personal Care Inc seeks to build an 82 bed personal care facility on Redevelopment Authority land at the corner of Long Avenue and South Jefferson Street next to Plaza South. The plan was received by City Council and referred to the Planning Commission. The two acre vacant commercial site sits near the corner and with Atlas Gas purchase the city expects annual savings of 4 000 to 5 000 dollars. The council also awarded Reliable Lumber 6 310 dollars to furnish a golf cart storage shed at Sylvan Heights Golf Course. Vocational-Technical School carpentry students will build the shed at no cost. Flashing lights will be installed at Butler Avenue and Paul Street and at East Please see COUNCIL, page 3.

Bomb in van tied to retaliation against Vincennes captain

Federal agents and police probed a pipe bomb that ripped through a van driven by the wife of USS Vincennes Captain Will Rogers III in a potential reprisal for Iran Air Flight 655's downing. Investigators reviewed threats, examined bomb fragments, and deployed explosives teams and dogs at the Rogers residence.

Twenty four dead as Air Ontario jet crashes near Dryden

UPI report details the Dryden Ontario crash of Air Ontario Flight 363. At least 24 people died with 47 survivors, including two U.S. citizens, Ron Manditch and Paul Tagger. Investigators from Winnipeg Toronto and Ottawa examined the wreckage while hospitals treated the injured and police searched for the 22 bodies in the forested crash site.
