City council debate centers on an appropriation ordinance with no pay raise for employes unless councils grant firemen a salary increase. The measure faces potential amendments as committees consider fiscal impacts.
City finance panel approved a 223 412 dollar city-wide running expense budget for the coming year up from 214 401 12 last year. United Press reports Philip Schuck Jr a noted cancer cure claimant died of arsenic poisoning. Dr C W Wright once of Nebraska and Leo Neujahr are under arrest charged with causing his death. A whiskey bottle with arsenic traces and an unsigned note by Schuch points to a plan involving Gresham Nebraska and treatment for stomach cancer.
In Albany on March 11 the Edith Melcher murder trial resumes Monday as prosecutors near the end of key testimony. Chief Quigley recounts a confession claiming Melcher forced carbolic acid on her son George after he asked for water, uttering Good bye son. The defense plans to argue insanity citing strained life conditions.
Mike Sullivan admitted the harsh beating he took against Bob Moha in a ten round boxing match in Milwaukee. Moha out-pointed Sullivan, who faced punishment in the last three rounds and waited for the bell.
Arrangements are underway at the Y M C A for the annual Preacher Lawyer debate to be held Thursday evening March 30. The venue and three potential subjects will be decided after a Monday morning report from a committee. George W. Bennett, son of Silas Bennett and a pioneer of New Castle, died in Cleveland at 2:30 AM from blood poisoning after a scratch on the ankle. He lived in Cleveland for years, worked in business with his brother Horatio, and invented the Bennett heater. Surviving siblings include Horatio, Charles, Frank, Mrs. W. H. Wade, Mrs. Eliora Porter, and Miss May Bennett. Funeral services set for Sunday in Cleveland, with burial Monday at Greenwood Cemetery in New Castle, conducted by Rev. J. H. Clemens.
George Massie of Chestnut Street blasts for a cellar for a six room cement house to be built this spring. David Good has begun excavations for a seven room brick house at Chestnut Street corner of Spruce Street.
Interior department announces Francis M. Cockrell former interstate commerce commissioner and Missouri senator will represent New Mexico in settling the Texas Mexico boundary dispute. He will be paid 20 dollars per day plus expenses. Texas will name a second commissioner.
A. C. Fry aged 24 was arrested in New Buffalo after eloping with 14 year old Annie Ernest of East Freedom Pa. Fry had worked on her father's farm near Altoona. They will be taken back to Pennsylvania tomorrow.

Taft praised the recent treaty with Japan as securing friendship with a powerful nation connected to US interests since Commodore Perry. Limantour denied any secret understanding between Japan and Mexico.
The body of John F. Bowen a 30 year old Wayne county school teacher was found on the Norfolk and Western tracks at Crum with two bullet holes. John D. Kermit the last man seen with Bowen is under arrest charged with the crime. Bowen had cashed money orders totaling 500 dollars earlier but the funds are missing. Bowen was superintendent of Crum public schools and a noted educator in southern West Virginia.
Mrs. Stanford Cohen of Francis street lost a valuable fur neckpiece and placed a want ad in The News. George Mitchell of East New Castle saw the notice and returned the fur to the owner.

Early vote in New Castle shows overwhelming support for closing the post office on Sundays. At noon 425 ballots returned with 400 in favor and 25 opposed, with final sentiment to be known after more ballots arrive. Local turnout indicates widespread approval.
