Harrisburg UPI reports the Senate Elections Committee will not postpone the May 18 primary despite census delays and will proceed with lowering the voting age to 18 for state and local elections by the November 2 municipal elections. Chairman Sen. Don Oesterling said the plan reflects testimony and aims to avoid last-minute planning clashes. The panel will pursue an Elections Code amendment to lower the age after the May primary, with potential court action expected on the broader Election Code changes. A December Supreme Court ruling grants 18 to 21-year-olds voting rights in federal elections.

Penn Power to raise bills via fuel adjustment clause
An average Penn Power residential bill will rise about 50 cents in March due to a new fuel adjustment clause approved by the Public Utility Commission. The clause ties rates to coal and fuel costs, with February’s area average at 14.56 dollars and 1970’s average at 12.67 dollars. A spokesman said the adjustment can move up or down, but a future decrease is not forecast. The PUC says the mechanism will offset rising fuel costs, noting coal prices rose 15.2 percent last year amid a coal shortage blamed on competition for good coal, exports to Japan, and a tightened mine safety act that pushed small operators out of business.

Five hurt in 422 accident in Mahoning Township
Five people were taken to St Francis Hospital after a head on collision on US 422 in Mahoning Township at 5 30 p m. The westbound car driven by Ruth Love 41 of 409 E Lincoln Ave crossed into the oncoming lane amid icy roads and struck Theresa Mariani 60 of 621 E Long Ave who was in the other vehicle. Responding troopers said all occupants in the Mariani car were injured or treated with bruises scrapes and possible rib fractures and knee bruises. Olga Gabriel 49 of 3712 Hollow Road and Alexander Melozzi 52 of 9 E Clayton St. and Ned Anderson 55 of 1007 Beckford St were treated and released for minor injuries. Mrs Love was treated and released for bruises and a sprained elbow and left upper arm.
