Mahoning Township supervisors adopt a 58 686 budget for the year based on a 14 mill property tax and two new levies a 1 wage tax and a 10 occupation privilege levy. They expect 38 171 from the property tax and 7 500 and 4 500 from the new levies.
Columbia University China expert A Doak Barnett testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee urging containment without isolation toward China and backing measured use of force in Viet Nam. He supported Johnson policy but urged greater restraint and more emphasis on economic and military limits.
The Senate approved a Social Security rider costing about 3.4 billion dollars over five years as part of Johnson's 6 billion tax package. The measure would extend benefits to 1.8 million Americans age 70 and over not currently covered and faces expected further debate as political dynamics shift.
