After a tense start under John Meehan, county government shows smoother operation. Meehan’s first 60 days reduced deadlock, pushed a revised budget, and moved housing and training programs forward. Key appointments included a county manpower director and a halfway house project near completion, signaling a morale uplift at the courthouse.
Mohawk residents circulated 523 petition copies this weekend asking the Mohawk School Board to refurbish the three current elementary schools and reuse the former Testimer building. The group, Mohawk Concerned Citizens, formed after a public meeting in Bessemer to push replacing the central facility with localized improvements.

UPI reports four U.S. partners in Aramco could approve a Saudi takeover. Talks involve Exxon, Texaco, Standard Oil of California, and Aramco, with security at the Bay Point resort near Panama City. Yamani attended, amid tight orders and a multi-day meeting.
Two Chester police officers Det William Taylor and PH Wilbur Tyson were shot in the abdomen during a burglary investigation at an apartment building. They were hospitalized in stable but critical condition after surgery as investigators consider mistaken identity possible.
A bisexual American soldier Spec. 4 Neil B. Thomas, 27, of Spokane Washington, says he will fight to stay in the army so bisexuals and homosexuals in ranks can come out of the closet. He condemns suppression and elimination in service and pledges to do his job.
Anthropologist Richard Leakey reports a complete skull from northern Kenya dated about 1.5 million years old, linking Homo to Australopithecus and suggesting co existence. He also notes an almost complete hip bone from another early man fossil dating 2.6 to 4 million years ago.
New York reports steady steel industry recovery with orders trending higher. If current pace holds, industry order books could reach 96 million tons by year end, surpassing the 80 million tons shipped last year, indicating stronger demand and output recovery.
Rep. Weight Patman of Texas, dean of the House and longtime critic of bankers, died at Bethesda Naval Hospital after a pneumonia battle. A 1928 entrant to Congress, he was once chair of the Banking Committee for 12 years and faced a reform wave that ended his chairmanship last year. Funeral planned at First Baptist Church in Texarkana.
John Chamberlain, whose essay These Jays appeared in the New Castle News, was named to receive a Freedoms Foundation Award in ceremonies at Valley Forge for a June 23 1975 King Features column critiquing puritanical zeal. He also won a 1970 award for an Independence Day piece These Days. Chamberlain, Yale graduate, once wrote for the New York Times Saturay Review Scribner's Wall Street Journal and others. His regular column appears today on Page 4.
