Reports indicate a new Red Army advance in the Smolensk region with heavy losses inflicted on German forces. German transport planes are said to be used on a mass scale in defense efforts.
The War Department says Gen Douglas MacArthur’s air raid destroyed three enemy transports totaling 30 000 tons at Subic Bay with thousands of Japanese soldiers killed or drowned. The communique notes none of MacArthur’s tiny air force was damaged and the action marks a notable Philippine defense achievement.
Japanese troops press across all Java fronts advancing toward Batavia and Surabaya. The U S high command notes a raid by British built Hurricane fighters and confirms Kalidjati air base occupation near Subang, heightening threat to Bandung and the Dutch East Indies command.

The body of about 50 year old Mrs Marion K Reich was found in a mid town hotel room after the occupants checked out. A 1500 diamond ring was missing from her left hand. Her husband a watch manufacturer said she left their hotel eight blocks away at noon yesterday for a luncheon with the couple in whose room the body lay. Police launched a hunt for the couple.
Mrs. L. W. Southern of 1214 Wilmington avenue reports that Rev. and Mrs. C. A. Gustafson have arrived safely in India to resume seven years of missionary service. They endured wartime sea travel and said their voyage covered roughly half the globe.
Washington reports American fighting men move to strategic theaters for a world wide offensive while General MacArthur's forces in the Philippines disrupt the Japanese invasion timetable. Additional U S troops reach northern Ireland as part of UN effort on all fronts.
French Ambassador Gaston Henry Haye demanded strong protest from Acting Secretary Sumner Welles after Britain bombed Renault Motor Works in the Paris area. He said reports from Vichy put French deaths over 1000 and 500 workers’ homes destroyed.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a garage and auto at the home of Carl W. Black of 531 Sampson Street. Loss about 1000 dollars, partly insured. Firemen were summoned by Box 69 at 8:35 p m and a second alarm at 8:45 p m sent four fire companies to the scene.
Savage fighting reported near Wan about 70 miles northeast of Rangoon as British rear guards clash with a strong Japanese vanguard. The Japanese threat to Rangoon grows grave with a new Pegu bridgehead. Generals Navell and allied forces seek massive reinforcements to stem the advance amid river losses and rising air power.
Rev Bradley Watkins pastor of Bechel United Presbyterian in North Beaver township accepted a call to Valencia United Presbyterian in Allegheny County. He will begin duties April 1 after serving Bethel Church for nearly three years.
A massive explosion at an Iowa ordnance plant in Burlington last night killed at least 15 and left others missing while 50 were injured. Officials said 15 dead were identified in undertaking parlors with more bodies believed in the shell loading building. Names include Hartzell Popejoy Kenneth N. Van Sickle William B. England Herschel H. Goddard Grover C. Keith Andrew Vorhees with many others unidentified. The blast was heard for miles and shook the city as investigators sought cause.
Thousands of fresh U S troops, forming the second expeditionary contingent, were dispersed across the six Ulster counties for advanced training in Northern Ireland. The unit joins British forces and the American Expeditionary Force already present since January 26 for combat training alongside British troops.
