Four years ago today Franklin D. Roosevelt assumed the presidency during a deep economic crisis. Banks were collapsing as he swore to defend the Constitution, with rain and a nationwide mood of fear.
Foes of Roosevelts court enlargement invite Felix Frankfurter to testify at Senate hearings next week to discuss the plan to add six justices. They expect Frankfurter to oppose retirement rules for justices over 70 and may invite Samuel I. Rosenman and Donald R. Richberg if not asked by proponents.
A small squirrel dodges between cars on West Washington near West Side school then back toward the curb as a truck carrying steel lurches its load. The vehicle broke its trailer body, blocking the street until help arrived. Repairs were made on West Washington street extension amid post warm weather potholes.
U S weather reports for the 24 hour period ending at 9 am show a maximum temperature of 51 and a minimum of 25 with no precipitation. River stage stands at 5.2 feet. Year ago on this date the maximum was 50 and the minimum 34.
A four alarm blaze in crowded lower East Side tenements killed two people and injured fifteen. Fire crews, led by Fire Commissioner McElligott with 22 units, battled flames for over three hours, rescuing more than 200 occupants and recovering two bodies from the wreckage.
In Somerset Pennsylvania, Dr George E Robinson testified that 64 year old Frank Monaghans ribs were not rendered brittle by age and were normal in elasticity. He and pathologist Herbert Lund noted 11 broken ribs including floating ribs, saying only severe external violence could cause such fractures.

The March grand jury urged county commissioners to place a courthouse funding question on the ballot and to add a new wing to ease congestion. They also urged repairs to the welfare home roof papering of rooms jail painting and daily display of the American flag at the courthouse. Indictments were handed down and several cases were stayed by statute of limitations including robberies assaults and vehicle violations.
City firemen were called to Greenwood Cemetery and to Jones Street off West State Street last evening to extinguish small grass fires. No damage was reported. Mrs. Martha Horchler of North Wayne Street left for a week visiting relatives in Frostburg and Cumberland Maryland.
Britain reports large shipments of arms and munitions from Germany and Italy to Franco’s forces in Spain. Tanks rifles planes and bombs arrive at Cadiz Seville and other rebel ports as non intervention looms. German ships skirt Gibraltar under cover of darkness and cargo moves via Italian and Spanish routes to Spanish Morocco and rebel ports.
Five youths are jailed after three cars were stolen in a night incident. Chief Criswell arrested Walter Jenkins four minutes after the report. Ellwood City police fired on suspects who fled after a crash. Other suspects named include Walter, Clarence, William and Carl Jenkins and Charles Probst. Lewis Dean reported his Arlington avenue car stolen from East Washington street. The report went to air at 11 p.m. and Criswell pursued from the East Side.
A five member committee appointed by the governor drafted a bill to merge the State police and the state highway patrol in Harrisburg. Members include Maj. Gen. Edward C. Shannon Maj. Lynn G. Adams Capt. E. J. Henry Joseph Sloane and Edward Friedman.
The annual Y. W. C. A. membership ingathering runs March 5 to 16 with a kickoff dinner at 6 30 p m. Churches appoint chairmen and committees to recruit new members and broaden community ties through shared ideals and opportunities for girls and women.

Dr Richard G. Miller a Charlottesville dentist confessed to an accidental chloroform death of 18 year old Cleo Sprouse during an illegal operation on Stony Point road near Charlottesville. He said the girl asked him to operate as a favor in a borrowed car and denied responsibility for her condition.
Government forces pressed toward Toledo as loyalists fought to seize the Alcazar site. Reports said a city suburb was held, with unconfirmed claims of entry into Toledo proper. West of Madrid and Oviedo saw renewed attacks as Miaja warned El Pardo defenses held.
Adam Haun, 94, Mercer county, is recorded as deceased. Rev. Lawrence M. Bartlebaugh, 52, of New Castle, is listed as deceased.
Hollywood stunt woman Cela Arnold, age 26, was killed instantly in Pasadena today when a light car overturned during filming a Warner Brothers picture The Hobo and the Heiress The driver Gordon Craveth, 32, and Loretta Rush, 30, escaped with bruises as the stunt was being doubled for principals.
London dispatch from Valencia reports two serious riots in Madrid as residents form long bread lines for eight hours and struggle with critical food shortages in the beleaguered city.
Sharon March 4 authorities announced Joseph Pulhosky of Greenville is insane and will not be prosecuted for murder after a sanity commission at Mercer found him unable to stand trial for strangling his 5 year old daughter.
Briggs Body Company in Detroit settles a sit-down strike eight hours after it began. About 14,500 Briggs workers resume jobs, joining 7,000 others nationwide in restored production due to concessions amid a broader wave of settlements.
Steubenville March 4 97 per cent of Weirton Steel employees in Steubenville Clarksburg and Weirton are behind the company union representatives who demand that rival employe organizations show documentary evidence of whom they represent before negotiations. The letter to President T E Millsop was signed by Jack Larkin and 90 others. National Steel the parent group employs 20000.
