Squirrel Narrowly Escapes Injury on West Washington Street

A small squirrel dodges between cars on West Washington near West Side school then back toward the curb as a truck carrying steel lurches its load. The vehicle broke its trailer body, blocking the street until help arrived. Repairs were made on West Washington street extension amid post warm weather potholes.

Tenement Fire in New York City Kills Two

A four alarm blaze in crowded lower East Side tenements killed two people and injured fifteen. Fire crews, led by Fire Commissioner McElligott with 22 units, battled flames for over three hours, rescuing more than 200 occupants and recovering two bodies from the wreckage.

Defense theories on Monaghan ribs disputed at trial

In Somerset Pennsylvania, Dr George E Robinson testified that 64 year old Frank Monaghans ribs were not rendered brittle by age and were normal in elasticity. He and pathologist Herbert Lund noted 11 broken ribs including floating ribs, saying only severe external violence could cause such fractures.

Jury Suggests Court House Vote In Lawrence County

The March grand jury urged county commissioners to place a courthouse funding question on the ballot and to add a new wing to ease congestion. They also urged repairs to the welfare home roof papering of rooms jail painting and daily display of the American flag at the courthouse. Indictments were handed down and several cases were stayed by statute of limitations including robberies assaults and vehicle violations.

Grass Fires Prompt City Fire Response

City firemen were called to Greenwood Cemetery and to Jones Street off West State Street last evening to extinguish small grass fires. No damage was reported. Mrs. Martha Horchler of North Wayne Street left for a week visiting relatives in Frostburg and Cumberland Maryland.

Five Teens Arrested In Auto Theft Case

Five youths are jailed after three cars were stolen in a night incident. Chief Criswell arrested Walter Jenkins four minutes after the report. Ellwood City police fired on suspects who fled after a crash. Other suspects named include Walter, Clarence, William and Carl Jenkins and Charles Probst. Lewis Dean reported his Arlington avenue car stolen from East Washington street. The report went to air at 11 p.m. and Criswell pursued from the East Side.
