Pennsylvan ia Engineering Works Wins Carnegie Mill Expansion

A $200000 contract awarded to the Pennsylvania Engineering Works calls for a 1000-ton mixer, an 80 foot high 65 by 110 foot structural steel building, a 75-ton crane, and fifteen 50-ton hot metal cars. Work starts soon bringing six months of elevated activity to New Castle's Carnegie steel mill and boosting capacity.

Joseph Love, charged with selling cigarettes to minors, entered a plea of nolo contendere in court. Judge Porter will impose sentence at a later date.

England To Feel Kaiser's Submarines

Berlin reports Germany will intensify submarine activity against Great Britain in retaliation for England's food embargo. Since the US note suggesting moderation, activity has paused, but that lull ends as Germany accepts Wilson proposals only if England agrees. The German reply to the American note is on its way to Washington.

Carbon Limestone awards a 40000 contract to Allis-Chambers Detroit for drying kilns and grinding equipment at Hillsville quarries. Wildcat oil well yields early 11 or 12 barrels daily near Volant

A new wildcat well on the Allen brothers farm southeast of Volant, near Neshannock Creek and the railroad, has reached 300 feet of oil in a 900 foot hole and is expected to produce 11 to 12 barrels per day. The find suggests rapid nearby development. The owners are Charles Crowl and the Allen brothers.

George Muse Earns Rotary Expo Trip

Colonel George Muse a local attorney and Rotary president will attend the International Convention of Rotary Clubs in San Francisco with all expenses paid as the New Castle Rotary club delegate. He was elected at the club’s June meeting held at Trinity Church after a dinner hosted by the congregation.

Pleas of Guilty Entered at Court

Pleas of guilty were entered today in three indictments involving young men recently arrested for larceny. Defendants include Walter Duffy John Jones David Johnson Robert Davis Ralph Dart John Be or John Jones William Sitler. Judge Porter took no disposition and will reconvene the cases later.

Anarchists Foiled At Dynamiting Plot Revealed

A bomb plot by anarchists aimed at St Patrick's Cathedral and the homes of John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie was uncovered when a detective extin guished a lit fuse as 700 massgoers were present. The weapon could have killed many, and the thwarted plan was exposed by undercover access to the group.

Mrs Anna E Lyons of Pearson street obtained a divorce from William C Lyons after desertion and adultery. They wed December 10 1913 and she testified he promised a home and to send for her but did not. Also Mrs Maria Mustel and Mrs Eliza Jane Hunt were granted divorces on grounds of desertion.

Rhodes Crusher Sets World Record at Shenango Plant

The Rhodes crusher at Shenango Limestone Company in Savannah broke the world record by processing 100 sacks of 100 pounds each in one hour. Owned by Mr. Rhodes, the unit will soon double its capacity.

Suit Filed to Collect On Notes Involving Covert Estate

Vera L. Beckwith sues Hiram G. Miller and A. Martin Graham executors and trustee of the J. W. Covert estate to recover two notes. One for 459.96 and interest from Feb 10 1913, the other for 56.60 and interest from May 16 1913. Plaintiff says the notes were given for money loaned to Dr. Covert. Also notes that Mr. and Mrs. James R. Barr of Cambridge Ohio have returned home after visiting Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hague.

Largest Limestone Lease Tangles Sheep Hill Near City

Leases secured on about 400 acres of limestone land around Sheep Hill for the George W. Johnson Limestone company. A 60 foot limestone crusher will be erected and mining start soon to supply Carnegie Steel and other furnaces. Farms across Taylor and Shenango townships are leased, with surveys underway to prepare the sites.

Courtney heirs claim land along Neshannock Avenue

Attorney S. W. Dana represented the Courtney heirs in a city council session this morning. They seek 300 dollars for land at the Croton avenue site, asserting ownership to the creek line and part of the land where the building rises, due to no fixed property line on Neshannock avenue. The issue will be reviewed in the committee of the whole.
