Fire on Holland America ship ends Seattle call then resumes voyage
The Westerdam returned to Seattle after a boiler room fire with no injuries reported. Coast Guard cleared the vessel as safe to continue to Alaska after checks by Coast Guard and Lloyd’s Register. Five detained after India building collapses near Chennai
Police detained five construction firm officials as rescue teams using gas cutters and shovels combed the rubble of a one story building that collapsed near Chennai amid monsoon rains. At least 26 dead in two weekend collapses, with about 20 survivors pulled from debris.

Nine Shot on Bourbon Street in New Orleans
In the early hours on Bourbon Street two men opened fire amid revelers, wounding nine, including two in critical condition. Victims, some tourists, were treated near Jackson Square close to Pat O’Brien’s and Preservation Hall. Police described the clash as the work of two cowardly young men. Mayor Landrieu promised swift law enforcement action.
