Cancer awareness monument honors Slamon research at New Castle High
Par for the Cure will fund a Dr. Dennis Slamon Cancer Awareness Memorial at New Castle High School featuring a tree planting and brick walkway. Slamon led UCLA research behind Herceptin, FDA approved in 1998 for genetic breast cancer targets. The project gained school board approval in June and expands nine year fundraising efforts nearing $1 million. An annual Courage of Life Award will honor local cancer fighters involved with Par for the Cure.

Council Eyes Area Demolition Plan Over Targeted Bids
At a work session Councilman Thomas Smith proposed moving from spot demolitions to a focused area in the city, aiming Lower East Side as the target. Councilman Richard Beshero supported phasing, noting some houses must come down. A $50,000 capital budget was set aside for area work, not spot demolitions. Stephanie Dean said the plan is to finish spot demolitions first, then target one area as code enforcement processes proceed. Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo indicated the Lower East Side as the probable focus. Smith suggested incorporating the 19 properties there to lower costs. Dean noted others aren’t ready due to required enforcement steps.
