Albert Dellevalle and William Wagner, both colored, are under arrest for a violent incident on Beaver Street sparked by jealousy over a bride-to-be. Wagner says the revolver discharged accidentally during a struggle for possession of the weapon.
Albert Dellevalle colored is in Shenango Valley hospital with a bullet wound near the abdomen and William Wagner colored is in county jail on $2000 bail awaiting a felonious shooting and murder hearing before Alderman Ranney. County detective W H Dunlap filed the information. The incident stemmed from a late night dispute at the Allen home behind the Y M C A when Dellevalle found Wagner with Miss Eva Brown. Dellevalle pulled Wagner from the swing and pursued the girl as Wagner threw stones. The confrontation moved along Beaver Street ending with a shot fired on Beaver Street. The two men give differing accounts of the events. Story of Miss Eva Brown follows on page two.
Council approves report of viewers for opening Delaware avenue from Moody to Park despite protests from Boyles Field Land Co and H. E. Black whose property will be taken. City solicitor ordered to draft an ordinance for the street opening. P. K. Fike for Boyles Field Land Co says the street offers no benefit and demands compensation for land taken.
In Canton Ohio on June 26 a 15 year old girl, Grace Berger, met her birth mother for the first time since infancy. They cried together after they were introduced. The girl, adopted by Mr and Mrs Jacob Berger, now believes her biological mother is Mrs William Jones.
Clarence E. Main of Ellwood City and William Smith of Grange Pa were married by Alderman Ranney at his office on Croton Avenue Thursday evening.
Signatures are being affixed to the initiative petition at the city clerk’s office. James Flanagan of Croton Avenue signed first at morning hour, with Mayor Tyler among early signers. By noon a considerable number of signatures were gathered and about 30 more were added by 2 o’clock as organizers press to meet the required total despite a shortened ten day window.
Three creditor committees seek to untangle the vast Claflin crash, with 27 related stores affected across the nation. Total liabilities reach about 36.8 million dollars, including 34 million owed to banks and 2.8 million to dry goods suppliers. Some stores face bankruptcy as the parent firm’s failure surfaces across cities from Brooklyn to the Pacific.
Robert Taggart reported last night that his pocketbook containing 13 dollars and a diamond cluster was stolen from the toolbox at No. 1 furnace. Police investigate but have not located the diamonds or money or any clues yet.
Claire Montgomery of Sankey street was severely bitten on the right arm last night by a dog owned by Herman Garner of Bell avenue. A doctor treated the injury. The same dog is alleged to have bitten another boy about six weeks ago.
Prof. J. L. Thalman, elected principal of New Castle high school, will be away for a while. He is not in Chicago but has gone to Hastings, Michigan, to spend his vacation before reporting to New Castle.
The cornerstone of St Margaret’s Catholic church in Mahoning town will be laid Sunday at 3 30 PM with Rev Fr P J McKenna announcing the event. Rev Fr William Curtin of St James Sewickley will deliver the sermon as Catholic societies attend along with visiting priests. A church choir will perform and lunch will be served at Rev Fr McKenna’s Madison avenue home. the church is expected to be completed by September and will be a handsome addition to the Seventh ward.
Joseph Dioti was arrested after a quarrel with Constantine Remaldi ended in a knife attack. Dioti, charged with felonious assault, said the weapon was used in self defense. Bail set at 500 dollars for Monday hearing before Alderman Ranney.
Farrell June 26 In a fit of anger Mike Bota of 408 Broadway allegedly hurled his wife down a flight of stairs at their home on Thursday. The woman fell about 25 feet and was found unconscious with severe bruising and possible internal injuries. Constable George Bird arrested Bota. Doctors say she may be bedridden for about two weeks.
In Zelienople on June 26 approximately 800 dollars was raised at the annual donation day of the Orphans' Home and Farm School under Rev. C. W. White. More than 2,000 attendees traveled from Pittsburg Greensburg and Beaver valley towns for speeches by Rev. Frank Beerstel of Greenville and Rev. Frank C. Oberly of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Pittsburg.
Dr. Eliah Kaplan, currently an interne at Shenango Valley hospital, will open offices in the former Dr. W. G. Wilson's building at North Mercer and North streets, and plans to occupy the space around early July.
A woman reported a bite from a feral or rabid cat in the city. She sought medical evaluation and authorities may inspect the animal and area for public health safety.
Mrs. Mary Toy of Edenburg was bitten twice on the hand by a cat alleged to be mad after a Saturday attack. The cat was killed and its head sent to Pittsburg for analysis at the Pasteur Institute. Confirmation of rabies led to immediate arrangements for Mrs. Toy to seek treatment in Pittsburgh for a time.
Samuel Bowder of Portersville was pulled along by a runaway farm wagon on Water Street as horses bolted with the wagon on its side. Bowder rode the reins to safety despite a near miss, aided by W Rayser near Clutton’s drug store. The wagon suffered a broken tongue but no one was seriously hurt.
A committee from the Women’s Civic League of the Seventh Ward asked Mahoningtown council to stop using loud explosives in fireworks celebrations. Spokeswoman Mrs James A Raney described the issue with councilmen referring the matter to a committee to devise an effective prohibition. Police have long sought to curb the practice.
A large automobile carrying several riders on West Grant street narrowly avoided serious injuries last night. The car, likely from a stranger, did not see the missing Grant street bridge end and veered. Witnesses’ shouts prompted the driver to apply emergency brakes, stopping the vehicle at the river bank edge.
Through the police station last night word was received for Mrs. Cora Hill that her daughter had been hurt at Parkersburg West Virginia. No particulars were given.
Dr. Bruce S. Weaver testifies in the Ballou death inquiry that the wealthy Republican leader was struck by a weapon wielded by another. Mrs. Helen M. Angle, singer and author, denies involvement as evidence links her to the scene near her Rippowana Trail suite. Ballou was last seen June 23 between 8 and 10 pm and found near Angle’s apartment with blood items found.
Mrs Helen Angle, central figure in the Waldo R. Ballou death, lies incoherent in a Stamford sanitarium. A former material witness released on 5000 dollars she shows signs of insanity, with doctors ordering constant nursing and a gag on food intake since arrest.
A meeting of those attending the annual Y M C A camp is held this evening at the association building. North Girard grounds have been set aside for local use for the last two weeks in July and plans for the coming camp will be made at the meeting.
Seventh ward and fifth ward youths clashed near Lawrence school house last night. Police report says the Seventh ward boys were chased away and all combatants fled before an officer arrived.
Lewis Williams of Reynolds street left yesterday to join his father on a small Texas farm where the elder Williams has lived for months. The family intends to make that place their home in the future.
A. C. Wirts and Arthur Lemons were directed last night to report at the mayor's office for violation of traffic regulations.
Howard Phillips, acting as a chauffeur, hops into a car near the police station and imitates starting it. As he touches the starter, the car lunges forward and he dives to safety as officers and others seize the vehicle, causing him to flee.
Members of First and Central Christian churches push to have every Bible school member present for the final attendance contest. The closing day will influence which church is declared the winner.
In the divorce suit of Albert C. Heckathorn versus Sadie J. Heckathorn Jacob Shook denied the charges against him He says his visits to the Heckathorn home were strictly business tied to ice delivery and not improper conduct per testimony by Heckathorn.
Police reports indicate three people were bitten by a dog owned by H Garner of 605 Bell Avenue. Mrs Montgomery of the same area reported a boy was injured, marking the third victim. officials say the case is under investigation.
Salem Mass June 26 two hundred persons missing and four dead after a fifteen hour fire that left 15 000 to 20 000 people homeless. The city lacks water and a relief camp on Highland Avenue distributes one thousand cots tents and blankets as officials estimate property losses between five and twenty five million dollars.
Salem Massachusetts facing a catastrophic blaze causing about 20 million dollars in damages. One third of the city ruined, four dead, 200 unaccounted, 50 injured, 15 hours of fire, martial law, and looters to be shot as aid pours in from 25 towns.
The militia commissary department feeds ten thousand with rations while five thousand homeless are sheltered under canvas. Today's rations include bread beef and coffee. the rich and poor are served alike. The city suffers heavy destruction with one thousand buildings burned and a listed death, Mrs. Edward McGlone, at Federal and Boson streets due to heart failure.
Equity case slated for Monday morning with Judge Porter presiding over R. W. Jackson versus Standard Wire Co Jonas Kaufman and others. Jackson accuses mismanagement and Kaufman of depreciating stock to buy cheap. Kaufman denies. Defendants L R Gordon and W H Marquis seek to join as plaintiffs. Testimony will decide if a receiver should be appointed.
The death record lists William Crooks age 54 of New Wilmington along with David R. Moore of Berkeley California and Andrew Highbarger of Mercer County with no further details.
