Drug ring busted in Lawrence County led by Michael Schmidt Sr
Narcotics officers say Schmidt from New Castle sourced heroin via Youngstown and ran a family and friend network. The operation allegedly moved thousands weekly, totaling 3 to 6 million dollars in the past year, with eleven others charged and eight arrested. Law enforcement says it was the largest heroin distributor in the county and once moved about a kilo weekly.

Water workers picket in New Castle over impasse with utility
Pittsburgh area members of Utility Workers Union Local 537 accuse Pennsylvania American Water of locking them out after a three year struggle for a contract. They say a June 9 imposition and June 18 benefit cancellations ignore negotiations and bargain in bad faith. Picket lines formed outside the district as workers protest lack of wage gains since 2011 and urge the company to return to talks.

House panel backs budget in a tight fiscal plan

Tom Corbett. It relies heavily on privatizing the state liquor stores to fund the plan, which faces a floor vote in a tightly divided House amid a tumultuous fiscal year.
