Capn William T Shorey Hero Of Sea Saga 1901
Capt William T Shorey commanded the John and Winthrope when two devastating typhoons struck while returning from the Okhotsk Sea to San Francisco. For 30 hours the crew fought to stay afloat as waves, wind, and damaged boats reshaped the bark. A thick fog near the Boscell Channel nearly doomed the voyage before Shorey’s seamanship brought the ship to port on November 3, 1901. Shorey, a pioneering Black captain on the Pacific Coast, commanded several vessels between 1287 and 1909 and later worked as a guard for the Pacific Coast Steamship Co.
