Governor George M. Leader vows to veto any sales tax bill if it reaches his desk as an alternative to his 411 million dollar income tax plan. He reiterates opposition to a sales tax while pressuring for passage of the income tax levy and notes the current 1 percent tax expires August 31.
Buenos Aires reports that scores of political prisoners were released under President Juan D. Peron’s effort to restore stability. The Radical Party says 24 provincial deputies in protective custody have been freed with more expected. Eva Peron area noted. Democrats announce release of President Felipe Yofre and other conservative leaders. Catholics detained in clashes also freed.
A new three cent commemorative stamp depicting the Old Man of the Mountains and bearing New Hampshire Live Free or Die is being sold at the local post office. The green stamp shows the historic image while nearby a stone sign reading Second Ward Patrol Station remains at the rear of the old City Building on East street. Well drilling observed near North Jefferson street suggests water for an air conditioning unit as a downtown scene. An old frame building on Grant street is being razed for modernization and hail damage reported in the county damaged roofs, plants, and glass in the northern area.

Memphis police charged garbage collector J C Wilburn with malicious mischief after he hauled off 25 wedding gifts left on Mrs Larue Hart’s back steps. The incident prompted city waste officials to investigate the disappearance of the gifts.
Obituary notices report the deaths of Robert D. Davidson age 37 of Bessemer and Earl H. Steen age 71 of Shenango Township. Both are listed in local death records with ages and residences.
Robert O. McCullough 48 of Buena Vista Drive suffered major damage to his automobile when a northbound tractor trailer struck it on the New Wilmington highway three miles north of the city at 3 40 p m Thursday. McCullough was in the center lane with turn lights on when the tractor driven by William K Engle 22 of Farrell struck tearing off the side of the car no injuries were reported.
A sawmill worker Willie Grady Cochran confessed to abducting raping and strangling 14 year old Patricia Ann Cook and dumping her body bound in a quilt into the Etowah River near Cartersville Georgia. Police ordered rescue crews to search the river as the probe focused on the isolated bridge location where the slip occurred.
Air Force officials probe two Randolph Field crashes near San Antonio killing five airmen and critically injuring two. A B29 exploding on takeoff killed four and injured two. a B57 twin jet crashed 16 miles north of San Antonio killing the student pilot.
Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co fired 15 employees at its Creighton plant for staging a wildcat strike defying union orders. Eleven others were suspended and about 4,000 workers were idle after some 300 warehouse workers protested incentive pay, with CIO United Glass Workers officers ordering a return to work.

A car traveling about 100 miles per hour crashed into a semi-trailer near Rockville Indiana. The blaze burned six people beyond recognition including three from Hammond and the driver Wayne Max Cain of Crawfordsville. The victims included Carl Barnett 34 the car's driver plus his six year old son and seven year old daughter and two men believed to be Barnett’s father and a relative.
The London Daily Express reports Argentine President Juan D Peron secretly married a 19 year old woman named Laura Del Solar, citing Rev Jose Fernandez of St Julius church in Buenos Aires. Parish priest Don Luis Gatti denies any wedding. Eva Peron died in July 1952 and remains celebrated in Argentina.

Secretary of the Treasury George M Humphrey asked Congress to extend the temporary 281 billion dollar debt limit for another year. He told the House Ways and Means Committee a tight squeeze is likely but expressed confidence the next fiscal year can proceed within the limit thanks to a strong business boom and better international outlook.
Cleo Rodgers, 52, fired a shotgun into the sidewalk to frighten three men talking on a Philadelphia street. The trio Major Stuart 26 Welford West 22 and Robert E Andrews 22 were wounded with superficial puncture wounds and discharged after treatment at St Luke's and Children's Medical Center. Rodgers was arrested after a struggle with officers in his apartment.
