Wilkes-Barre flood remembered as worst disaster in US history
Agnes called the flood the worst natural disaster in American history. Gov. Miltonne fled by boat from Harrisburg as the Susquehanna swelled. The Fort Pitt Museum in Pittsburgh flooded while Wilkes-Barre benefited from aid and downtown restoration. Federal and SBA loans eased recovery, and 2,000 caskets were disinterred from Forty Fort Cemetery.
