Rail union poised to strike as talks stall over pay and holidays
The Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen threaten a nationwide strike after 99.7 percent of local committees authorized action. With 140,000 members, the union demands a 1242 percent wage rise, two extra holidays, longer vacations, and a one-year contract. Johnson could delay action with emergency boards and cooling-off periods. Current pay is about $19 to $23 daily, with overtime boosting annual earnings to roughly $8,500 to $9,500. The dispute centers on paid holidays including Good Friday and an employee birthday, and two-week vacations for less than five years of service.
