A large crowd attended the ninth Catholic Day Picnic at Cascade Park despite threatening weather. Thousands filled the park with hundreds of children, many arriving by bus from outside the city. A 19 year old Ellwood City resident Stanely Telsz escaped injury after his car struck another vehicle then a ditch and the lawn before hitting a house east of New Castle on US 422.
