WASHINGTON June 20 The House Ways and Means Committee cleared the way for enactment of a new revenue bill by July 31 as it boosted corporate taxes and cut excise levies. The plan lowers excise taxes on jewelry luggage furs cosmetics and more while raising corporate taxes for large firms and imposing a 10 percent withholding on dividends. The net result is a 433 million dollar gain in revenue with other reductions in depletion allowances.

Kidnapper slain after car trunk captivity ends in gun battle
Two teens describe 43 hours trapped in a locked auto trunk after hitchhiking kidnapper Joseph Pacific forced them to ride through three states. Pacific, a 32 year old Canonsburg wiring contractor, died in a gun battle with Ohio authorities on a Mingo Junction street. his estranged wife, also kidnapped and assaulted, fled. Slack Taken To Knoxville
Alfred Dean Slack, 44, a Syracuse chemist accused of espionage for Russia, was moved from Oneida county jail to Knoxville, Tenn., to face a federal grand jury. He had been arrested by the FBI in Syracuse last week as an accomplice of Harry Gold in obtaining defense secrets. Slack formerly worked at an ordnance plant in Kingsport, Tennessee, and was named by FBI Director J Edgar Hoover as a contact who supplied classified information to Gold in 1943 and 1944.
