Corn Field Bootlegger Den Unearthed in Mercer County
Mercer Pa June 11 bootleggers rise with enforcement of the 18th amendment. A hidden hillside still in Diawara township on the old Hopper farm used corn planted over the roof to camouflage the operation. Officers Jack Hurt and Lester Shaw arrested a negro at the still room in a camouflaged cellar. The entrance was narrow, making barrel removal a feat. The dugout, hillside site provided a lookout and proof bootleggers adapt cleverly to hide operations.
