PERTH Australia INS Britain detonated an atomic device today in the Montebello islands off northwest Australia. Officials said the blast was smaller than the May 16 test but witnesses noted it was brighter and more spectacular than prior explosions. Onslow residents watched all three detonations and saw a fast rising mushroom cloud.
Drilling for natural gas on J Audley Boak farm will stop after a failed shooting of the well Monday. A glycerin explosion produced a five foot flame and insufficient gas to be commercial. Phillips Gas Co will plug the well this week after pulling thousands of feet of casing.
Nine construction workers were injured in a gas explosion at Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. 's new $34 million plant in Cumberland Maryland. The blast hit a silo building used for glass making materials shortly before 8 a.m. The injured electricians and plumbers were hospitalized at Cumberland Memorial Hospital. The plant has been under construction for over a year and aims to begin production late in 1956.
