Republican leaders in Topeka began pre-convention talks with Governor Alfred Landon and national figures. John D. M. Hamilton and Earl Warren were among early arrivals to map a nationwide swing with caucuses and speeches across New York Boston Philadelphia and other eastern cities. Hamilton was met by Topeka crowds as they honor him.
Early Sunday a head-on collision on Ellwood City road near Cascade park killed C. L. Hyde 35 of 409 Reis street en route to New Castle in a newly purchased car. Charles Phillips of 626 Raymond street and Raymond McConahy 25 of R F D No 6 East New Castle fled the scene. McConahy was later sought by Coroner Orville Potter. Isabel McConahy 18, a Phillips car occupant, suffered a compound fracture and broken collar bone and was hospitalized in fair condition. The Phillips party had been at a roadhouse on Route 422 west of the city.
The United States begins delivering over 2.6 million envelopes of bonds and checks totaling 2 billion dollars to World War I and II veterans. From 45,000 post offices nationwide, 37 million bonds and 6 million checks are prepared for 3.5 million eligible ex servicemen. The mail campaign uses motor trucks and even dog teams to reach veterans, with the distribution running day and night.
The West Middlesex frame house known as Alfred Landon’s birthplace also marks the birth site of Dr. H Lloyd Rich, a prominent New Castle resident born in 1884 to Rev Albert Russell Rich who later led Epworth M E Church in town. Police seek to identify culprits who damaged three elm trees between Croton Avenue and Neshannonck Creek over the weekend. The largest tree, eight years old, valued around $500, had limbs torn off leaving it a wreck, with two other trees also damaged. authorities say the work was done by adults, not youths.
Last rites of the Catholic church were prepared for Gilbert K. Chesterton a renowned author and essayist who died of heart failure after a brief illness. A requiem mass is set for St Theresa’s Church with his wife and secretary at his bedside. Chesterton had recently returned from France where he visited the Lourdes shrine.
A crowd of about 500 watched Brig. Gen. Stackpole deliver the address as the Major Joseph W. Cunningham armory cornerstone was laid at 3 p.m. in Cascade park. The ceremony opened with the American Legion Junior band, followed by invocation by Rev. Andrew J. Koonce. Local officials, Civil War veteran D. M. Clark, and reserve corps leaders were introduced.
Col. Frank Knox, Republican vice presidential nominee, said he would seek assignment to frontline campaign duty. He will meet Gov. Landon and party leaders in Topeka to discuss orders and course of action. Chicago HQ Hamilton announced London Knox campaign headquarters will be in Chicago with activity starting by July 1.

St Petersburg bulletin reports three air station crewmen killed when an amphibian patrol plane plunged into Tampa Bay. Names listed are Pilot C. M. Perrott, radio man Walter O. Morriss, and machinist mate First Class William D. Eubanks. Wreckage sighted by seaplane searchers shortly before noon. No survivors indicated.
Al Smith will not attend the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia unless other anti Roosevelt Democrats commit to be present. The former governor calls the Farley machine too strong to challenge alone and fears hostile Philadelphia organizers and a razzberry if he shows up to oppose Roosevelt policies.

Washington June 15 A temporary deadlock over the 830 million tax bill stalls hopes for congressional adjournment this week. House and Senate conferees clash over relief and other legislation as President Roosevelt presses his plan to tax undistributed corporate earnings. A Senate filibuster looms if the Roosevelt approach is revived by the conferees. The conference resumes with administration allies prepared for a quick showdown.

A militant organization named Republican Men of Pennsylvania is formed to campaign for Gov Alfred M Landon of Kansas for president and Col Frank Knox of Chicago for vice president. Franklin S Edmonds Philadelphia attorney chairs the executive committee and announced the move in Pittsburgh on June 15.
