Diphtheria Outbreak Linked to Carnes Family
In the Seventh ward at Wabash and Wayne streets the Carnes family sickness spread from a tonsillitis diagnosis to diphtheria. Howell Spencer of Pittsburg visiting the home fell ill and died. Edward Syling, a boarder, also contracted diphtheria, followed by Mrs. Syling who traveled from the countryside. The health worker later confirmed the initial illness was diphtheria, not tonsillitis.
