Mansfield urges nationwide primaries and popular vote for president
Senate leader Mike Mansfield proposes sweeping electoral changes to preserve the system. He urges simultaneous primaries in all states and election of the president by popular vote, with candidates limited to radio and TV appearances for safety. He doubts passage and cites security concerns after Kennedy’s assassination, while noting little support for abolishing the Electoral College. Mansfield also backs lowering the voting age to 18 with President Johnson.
