Government aims to ease grain storage crisis and boost prices
Washington reports a dual move to solve the grain storage crisis. President Truman signs a bill expanding government storage capacity, and Agriculture Secretary Brannan doubles storage loans and temporarily liberalizes the grain support program. The department will buy 191000 long tons of wheat for shipment to Europe and Asia in June. Senator Thomas introduces a bill to allow government wheat subsidies amid farmers’ losses from the storage bottleneck.
