Parents spar with officials at school meeting
At a three hour session in New Wilmington about 500 district residents pressed Superintendent Louis Brueggemann and the Wilmington Area School District board over rising taxes and program cuts. Tax increases of 17 mills in Lawrence and nine in Mercer counties prompted questions about funding, with critics noting reductions in kindergarten, activity bus service, and classes. Brueggemann cited costs, declining aid ratios, and district size, and outlined changes from maintenance cuts to language course restructuring. A former student and other residents pressed for bus service to enable athletic participation and college opportunities, while debate over bus costs and potential contracting continued. End with note to see Wilmington page 7.
