In Humboldt Park a Saturday night gunfight and a bystander death sparked a full scale riot with about 3 000 rioters burning looting and battering police. Police reported 130 arrests eight stores looted two buildings burned and 80 civilians and 48 officers injured.

Watergaters get jail term in Watergate case

John Mitchell and H R Haldeman were sentenced to 30 months to eight years for obstructing justice conspiracy and perjury in the Watergate cover up. Sirica gave them until June 22 to arrange personal affairs before reporting to prison. Ehrlichman had been sentenced previously and began serving his sentence.

NASA sketches bold planetary exploration plan for 1980s

Debts total 3.4 trillion as U.S. per capita burden nears three years

Commerce Department reports 1976 total public and private debt at 3.4 trillion, or about 15 400 per person. Private debt rose 10 5 percent while federal debt climbed 15 6 percent, as homebuilding and business borrowing pushed totals higher.

Lightning Outage Triggers Fire Station Close Call

A morning power outage at Johnson Bronze substation caused electricity loss across Maple and Taylor streets and to nearby facilities including Pennsylvania Engineering and the Social Security office.
