John Makinen of Bessemer was arrested by County Detective Breen as officials seek to determine if the death of his wife was natural. A post mortem and exhumation were ordered to probe possible foul play amid sparse details of a late Friday birth and swift burial.
Stroudsburg Pa June 6 Mrs John Buck 41 took her own life by hanging at the Bucks home on Paradise Valley farm. She tied a stout cord to a wall hook four feet up and suspended herself on the couch to strangle. Her mother had died in the same manner years earlier.
Columbus, June 6. Prosecutor Turner warned the Ohio bribery scandal could expand after Representative Evans admitted bribery and was fined 500 dollars. Evans testified before the grand jury, with his cross examination continuing, and his confession is expected to implicate many senators and representatives.
New York June 6. Henry A. Schieb the chauffeur suspected of murdering his wife faced further police court examination before Magistrate Corrigan. The grand jury heard 25 witnesses and an indictment charging murder was expected to be returned by tomorrow.
Zaharie Grabinski a 23 year old Russian native was instantly killed by a Bessemer freight train at the Pierce avenue crossing in Lyndora a suburb of Butler The body was nearly severed and terribly mangled in the incident reported yesterday by local authorities
United Press reports a suspected assassination plot against Francisco I. Madero thwarted at Aguas Calientes. A banquet at the Casino hotel was interrupted when lights went out and Mrs. Madero was moved to safety by a citizen committee. Madero and his wife escaped with guards, hurried to their private car amid a narrow street chase.
Miss Alice Johnson, principal of a Gladd Illinois high school, will marry Rev. W. F. Bostick only after he secures a 2000 yearly post. He has resigned his Western Avenue Baptist church over the pay dispute and intends to teach or seek a new pastorate.
Havana June 6. Workers continue pumping water from the coffer dam surrounding the battleship Maine. The walls hold against external pressure and engineers plan to pump to five feet, then suspend operations to inspect the dam's integrity.
City teachers were elected for various schools at a regular school board meeting but their proposed $2,000 annual raise covering 135 teachers was rejected. The board kept the current salaries and held elections for special teachers tru ant officer high school teachers principals and supernumeraries with results continued to the next page.
A petition to remit the $500 bond of Rev. C. S. Brooks and Robert Wylie, bondsmen for John M. White, was presented in court. They claim they delivered White in court as agreed and thus are not liable. Judge Porter set a rule returnable first Monday of July at 10 a.m.
Property owners in the Second Sixth and Seventh wards can pay their taxes tomorrow. The tax books for these wards were turned over to the city treasurer today and assessment notices were sent this afternoon. Books for the First and Fourth wards are expected to be completed this week and remaining wards ready for collection next week.
