Bombing Planes Reach Germany in First European Visit

First World War II Victory Medal Presented in Lawrence County
Walter Kicler presents the first World War II Victory Medal to Roland G. Mortimer of 1011 Adams Street at the U S Navy Recruiting Station in the Post Office building. Mortimer, a 32 month Navy veteran, served from June 1943 aboard USS Oakland in Task Force 58, took part in 12 campaigns from the Marshall Islands to Okinawa, and witnessed the Tokyo surrender. He also holds the American Theater and Asiatic-Pacific ribbons with ten stars and the Philippine Liberation medal with two stars. He works for P and L E railroad as a clerk and recently enrolled in the Navy Reserve as the 200th recruit locally.
