Boston reports collector Edmund Billings says private advices claim U S warships captured the U boat that sank American vessels off New York. Secretary Daniels says no such report and hopes it may be true.

Eleven survivors report the American coastwise schooner Edward H. Cole was sunk 75 miles off Atlantic Highlands New Jersey by a German U-boat. The vessel ran between Norfolk Virginia and Portland Maine. Survivors were rescued after abandoning ship in lifeboats. Paul Welsh has arrived in France.

The Navy Department in Washington announced that three American schooners were sunk by enemy submarines off the Atlantic coast. Officials said the Atlantic fleet is actively pursuing U boats and anticipated larger losses may exist, with confirmed fatalities at three by noon.
