Growth in New Castle post office under Harry M Good since 1916 included a 60 percent rise in business and 50 percent more staff. Parcel post volume surged 400 percent. J Norris, formerly of the city council, succeeds him.
Riot incidents linked to Ku Klux Klan gatherings leave five injured. Stones and clubs injure others. Police report firearms including sixteen shotguns and several revolvers found at the scene. Investigators seek witnesses and seize weapons for review.
Two separate incidents of mob violence and a mail robbery attempt are reported. In Haverhill Massachusetts and Groveland clashes between Klan members and anti Klan groups left five shot and several injured. at East Orange New Jersey a mail robbery attempt at a railway station ended with one robber killed and a clerk shot in the leg. Police report numerous arrests and an arsenal seized. Eugene Stack, 22, saved valuable mail during the East Orange incident.
New York July 31 Peggy Hopkins Joyce says she is through with marriage but not with love, recalling five husbands including J Stanley Joyce the Chicago lumberman she calls the best and most generous. Harry Mack a 35 year old stock broker died in his West 8th Street apartment in New York in front of his fiancee Peggy Cook of Philadelphia while a party for her visit was underway. He pressed a revolver to his temple to prove it would not discharge and fired killing himself instantly after a prior attempt to reassure her.

Long Island Railroad employees James J. Moor of Rahway New Jersey and Alfred C. Hunt of the signal tower were arrested on homicide charges after a wreck at Sunny Side yards Long Island City. One person, Walburra Buck 39 of Flushing, died and four were injured as a ten car train derailed after Moor allegedly threw a switch before the train cleared.
The Persian government sent a formal note to the United States promising extreme efforts to pursue and punish those who killed American vice consul Robert Imbrie in Teheran. It stated the imperial government would take steps to make reparations and even transport the body to the United States on a Persian battleship if available.
Howatd Anderson was charged with speeding by Officer J Moore and paid a five dollar fine this morning at the police court.
