Appeal for Coal Sent to Senate in Food Crisis
Washington July 31 An appeal for coal to save ruinous waste of food grain in Iowa was made to the senate by W G Rice Coal Co of Davenport. The company said 600 cars of coal were needed at once to prevent loss of grain and food in cold storage warehouses and canning factories. Threshing had stopped due to fuel shortage. It was the first direct appeal for coal to the senate in the present emergency.
Increased Duties On Woolen Blankets Strengthen Tariff Bloc
Washington July 31 The Republican tariff bloc won again by pushing sharply higher duties on woolen blankets. The Senate rejected Lenroot’s amendment 27 to 30 then approved the committee’s plan 30 to 24, imposing 20 cents a pound plus 30 percent ad valorem on cheap blankets, with a sliding scale up to 40 cents a pound and 40 percent ad valorem on the dearest.
