British and French forces breached German trenches in Belgium and along the Aisne after a week of heavy bombardment. Initial objectives were reported as captured with continued advance while German counter attacks failed to halt the drive on the western front.
Judge and Mrs. S. P. Emery returned from an auto trip to Bedford Springs Gettysburg and Washington D C. The journey reported 8000 troops drilling at Gettysburg and visible military preparations in eastern cities with National Guard and inductees housed in tents and wooden barracks.
The Harmony interurban line updates its timetable with earlier departures from the local station to Pittsburg Butler and Ellwood City at 15 minutes to the hour and arrivals here at 15 minutes past the hour. A thirty minute layover remains, with running time added between this city and Ellwood City.
Troop F lists 103 men this morning with Joseph Shephard added to the roster. Two Beaver Falls men have not yet reported and vacancies may be filled by others. No orders received about departure. if original plans held, the troop would have left tomorrow, but that seems unlikely.

Vessels would use oil burners, with 13 to 14 knots cruising and 16 knots max, offering rapid speed and hull safety against torpedo damage.

Ali Koobinoph of New York was set on a warrant charging him with uttering threats against the lives of John D Rockefeller and his son and J P Morgan. He admitted being a Socialist and anti militarist but denied threats. He had been under surveillance after a complaint by John Reynolds a commission merchant. Koobinoph is a naturalized American citizen born in Russia who came to this country 20 years ago.
The drowning accident at the cement company dam saw three heroes, Richard Johns, Harry McKissick, and Boris Brown, dive in to recover Ignacy Gierloch’s body about 9 p.m. They brought the body to land after the deep-water rescue.
A published draft notice lists the first hundred New Castle residents summoned for physical examination. Each entry shows the registration draw number and serial, with names and addresses, ahead of a Monday examination at city hall.
Provost Marshal General Enoch Crowder reported broad American support for the draft law and dismissed reports of widespread exemptions as unfounded. He said the law affects the American home and will be judged by 1917 service, with public opinion likely to pressure those seeking evasion.

Washington July 31 National Guard camp plans made necessary as Ohio troops will encamp separately at Montgomery Ala with about 23 000 to 24 000 men forming a full division while West Virginia Indiana and Kentucky guards stay at Hattiesburg Miss leaving Ohio troops alone at Montgomery.
First 100 men are to report at City Hall next Monday for physical exams with ten doctors and stenographers ready. Exemption rules and posting of lists will guide phases, with 1500 men potentially needing review to fill New Castle's quota.
New York reports police open probes into allegations that foreign born citizens summoned for physicals under the draft are trying to pay physicians to claim them unfit for service.
