Fourth judge sought for county in Pennsylvania bill
Lawrence County may gain a fourth full time judge if Senate legislation creating more judgeships passes. The county is not named yet, but local judges and commissioners urged inclusion. Sen Mary Jo White says the bill has cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee and may be amended to include Lawrence County. If approved, the new judges would take effect January 2, 2002 and be filled by the 2001 municipal elections after space and cost concerns are addressed by the county commissioners.

Atlanta gunman kills nine and then suicide
An apparently distressed day trader opened fire in two offices, killing nine and wounding 12 before fleeing. Five hours after police stopped his van at a gas station, he killed himself. Authorities found his wife, son, and daughter dead at their suburban home, bludgeoned two days earlier.

National Night Out Comes to New Castle Tonight
A 16 year national crime prevention event debuts in New Castle next week. Local officials and the Lawrence County District Attorney’s Task Force aim to boost crime and drug prevention by inviting residents downtown to view safety programs. National Night Out runs 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday.

New Castle approves high school contracts with two firms
New Castle Area School Board approved architectural and construction manager contracts for the new high school. Eckles Architecture will be paid six percent for architectural work on the high school and a Ben Franklin Junior High renovation. Dopple Rizzo and Associates will bill hourly from twenty to eighty dollars with no cap. Total project costs are about 22 million for the high school and 10 million for the junior high. Invoices must be itemized, state audits will occur, and the district may terminate for unsatisfactory performance.
