Rep. Herter of Massachusetts, a Hoover aide, was named executive head of a House committee overseas probe. The 18-member delegation will depart New York August 27 to study postwar Europe's economic needs, visiting Britain, the Ruhr, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Trieste and Greece.
President Truman, grieving his mother Martha Ellen Truman, returns to a heavy workload after the July 30 burial in Grandview Missouri. He signs a $32 million government corporations appropriation and considers recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board under Taft Hoy. He nominated J Copeland Gray Abe Murdock and Robert N Denham as counselor. Senate action was pending.
President Truman, mourning his mother, signed 35 bills including a Greco Turkish aid appropriation. The aid program allocates 1.658 billion dollars with 400 million for Greece and Turkey and 332 million for foreign relief. Other bills funded Agriculture, the military, government corporations and independent agencies.
Undersecretary of State Robert A Lovett outlined that the United States will pursue further measures to settle the fighting in Indonesia. He said Washington is consulting with several governments and would act if the Indonesian case goes before the United Nations Security Council.

Batavia reports Dutch forces widening mop up operations across north central Java and northern Sumatra as controversy persists over a twin engine plane crash near Jogjakarta. The Indonesian government says the craft was shot down by Dutch fighters killing nine, including three Brits, while Republicans claim it carried medical supplies. Dutch aviators say ammunition may have been aboard but deny shooting the plane, noting it hit a tree after a warning volley.

Fordham University reported a strong earthquake that began at 9 56 a m EDT and lasted four hours. The quake was estimated to be located about 9200 miles from New York in the southwest Pacific, according to Rev Joseph J Lynch who heads the university seismograph.
Rescue crews search the wreckage of a downtown beauty shop where a gas explosion killed ten women and wounded about forty, most believed to be students from a beauty operators school in the basement. Authorities fear the death toll could rise as reports mention additional victims. Rockingham Memorial Hospital faced heavy strain. fire prevented a wider conflagration as gas in the basement reportedly exploded when an electric heater activated.
More than 1 000 Ohio Republicans gather in Columbus to kick off a Taft for president campaign. The advance guard of Senator Taft from Cincinnati arrived to set the stage for a statewide rally and campaign kickoff. Taft's team includes secretary Jack Martin Cleveland lawyer Paul Walter and publicity man William McAdams.

Mrs Ida Mae Bourbonnais was reported recovering from cuts inflicted by her husband seconds before he was shot and killed by Constable Devil Barker in an Oklahoma City courtroom during a peace bond hearing. The victim J J Bourbonnais, 40, rushed the wife and wounded her abdomen and left hand after the judge had certified him to district court. The hearing involved a complaint by Betty Jo Bourbonnais, the victim’s daughter, accusing him of burning her mother’s face with a cigarette.
John William Dawson of Baden, a burglar suspect, was shot and badly wounded in a rooftop shootout with local officers on East Washington Street rear of the Household Finance Company Saturday evening. He showed gains overnight and was reported on the road to recovery at the hospital. Police continue an active investigation into Dawson's recent activities.
