Salt Lake City July 3 reports a pilot recounting a stopover in Cheyenne during the frontier days celebration. He mentions a private air mail flight from Chicago to Beverly with $206 worth of stamps pasted on him. Notes the heat crossing desert and borrowing mittens from the pilot.
Reports from the lake shore indicate corn has developed and is sold at roadside markets near the lake. Weather differs from Lawrence county with three weeks of rain and warm spells. William Wallace, 30, of Akron, died after his car overturned on Butler road near Weigletown while fleeing on a vacation trip with wife Helen and 14-year-old daughter Lorain. Helen and Lorain remained hospitalized in shock as reports varied. the accident happened shortly before noon and threw all three through the car glass.
Robert J. Tully, general superintendent of Carnegie Steel's New Castle works, announced the plant is operating daily after months of Wednesday shutdowns. He believes the steel industry will continue to hold up and extend the improved condition.
Robert Hoffman an 11 year old deaf boy reports partial hearing restoration after a Curtiss Field flight in New York. Captain William Purcell piloted the plane performing loops dives and rolls reaching 5000 feet. Mrs Hoffman plans another flight to continue treatment based on the partial success.
Death notices list Mrs. Martha E. McCoy aged 70 of 693 Newell Avenue Mary Elizabeth Johnson two months old in New Castle Jack Rodgers age 10 in Cuyahoga Falls Margaret Fox age 13 in Carnegie Pa and Mrs Minnie Capots aged 66 of West Pittsburgh with locations and ages noted.
International News Service reports seven killed and 57 injured in weekend accidents across Pennsylvania with drownings adding five deaths. Western PA saw one drowning and five auto fatalities with 34 injuries near Johnstown. a bus rollover by the Hebrew Institute of Pittsburgh harmed 20 near Greensburg. Pittsburgh area had two deaths and eight injuries. Other towns listed deaths and injuries from auto crashes including Gettysburg Harrisburg Lancaster Steelton Pottsville Huntingdon and Philadelphia.
Program for the Pennsylvania inter county Grange picnic at J Audrey Boak farm on August 3 includes W B Hill of Huntingdon as chief speaker. Mount Jackson High School Orchestra will perform under W H McCullough. Ox roast features Kilmer Harris of Indiana professional roaster with a 550 pound ox. special ovens and parvers will be used. The afternoon program will include guest speeches and events.
Berlin July 30 A Czech meteorologist and crew member of the Nobile Arctic expedition defended General Umberto Nobile the voyage leader He attributed the Italia disaster on May 25 to a gas leak aboard the balloon stating ice on the floe was not the cause He noted Nobile was saved first for being lightest in weight and that rescues were arranged before Lundborg arrived on the floe
Three people were injured Sunday morning when a car owned by Mr and Mrs Young of Woodlawn Pa toppled on Miller avenue near the Youngstown road. They were taken to Shenango Valley hospital for treatment. Injured were Mrs Rebecca Eger fracturing her right arm who remains hospitalized, Louis Young who could go home, and Joseph Young a boy injured in the leg who stayed at the hospital.
Bernard Gascinski, 17, survived a five story fall from a tenement roof in New York. Doctors report no broken bones after the fall onto cement pavement amid initial scary injuries.
In New York on July 30 a collision on the Sixth Avenue elevated line at 12nd street left about fifty passengers injured as two wooden car trains telescoped. One train surged into another during a blackout, causing four cars to crush passengers on the platform and in cars. Fire from a hot box added a dramatic blaze as authorities investigate blame and hospitals care for victims.
Four motorists die and two children are seriously injured when a Central Railroad of New Jersey train collides with an automobile in Dunellen New Jersey. Victims are Glover Mayer 48 his wife Mary 48 Mary Soltis 27 and her four month old son George Soltis Jr. The Soltis other two children are critically injured. The train was an empty westbound excursion train with no gates at the crossing. Watchman Donald McCoy says Mayer disregarded the stop signal.
Cascade Limited of Southern Pacific rear ended a special Amtrak Bar Association train near Cortena. About 170 lawyers and families aboard faced injuries and hospital treatment as rescuers pulled victims from twisted cars. Names include W. F. Dalzell and James F. Kane among the injured. several Pittsburghers reported.
President Calvin Coolidge will aid Herbert Hoover in the campaign by delivering three speeches and guiding party strategy. The plan, backed by Republican leaders, aims to use Coolidge as adviser and strategist as the fall campaign peaks.
Herbert Hoover began a 550 mile journey from California and rode to Merford Oregon to fish the Rogue River for steelhead. He sought solitude, fished with a small party including reporters, and used a heavy line with a fly lure as the steelhead earned its reputation as a fighting fish.
Two cars collided near Rose Point on Butler road as the Gardillo car and a Pittsburgh machine driven by Harry Beck tried to pass. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Gardillo suffered serious injuries and were taken to Butler Hospital while occupants of Beck’s car received attention from a local physician.
International News Service from Berlin reports a bomb found in a package addressed to Marshal Pilsudski in the Polish army office. The attempt was foiled, and secret dispatches from Warsaw described rumors that Pilsudski might have shot a guard in anger when the incident leaked.
