Serbs flee the city under heavy cannonade while Austrians press advances, forcing a strategic withdrawal as military operations intensify around Belgrade. The bombardment continues, with Allied observers monitoring evolving frontline moves and the humanitarian impact rising.
Belgrade has fallen, Austrian war office reports Serb capital occupied after heavy bombardment. Austrian gunboats blasted the city to clear a small Serb force as they blew the bridge linking Serbia and Austria. In another front near Fotdha, Serbians suffered a crushing defeat with about 800 killed and two Serb divisions captured.
Warren Davy of 730 Arlington avenue reported to police a collision on East Washington street between an automobile and a horse he was driving. The license plate 84430 was left at the scene and registered to Peter Klemn, 131 West Long avenue. the horse is expected to die and action against the driver has yet to be decided.
Customer Margaret Thomas of Kane PA encloses money and orders for Rogers silverware including knives forks teaspoons and dessert forks with prices listed. The ad promotes news advertising as a seller in New Castle Lawrence County and adjoining counties. Mather Bros. Co. Kane PA references a prior Kane ad.
City Treasurer C. C. Duff and his wife received a belated wedding serenade twenty five years after their marriage in New Bedford. A brass band and hundreds gathered in Duff’s yard for a watermelon party as relatives and neighbors re created the long awaited ceremony, with Duff and his wife enjoying the surprise crowds and hospitality.
European observers warned of an imminent general war as Germany mobilized on the eastern frontier and Russia ordered partial mobilization for over a million men. Austria invaded Serbia and bombardment of Belgrade raised tension despite a British denial of full mobilization.

Detective W H Dunlap arrested Jacob Smith Jr on a liquor selling without license charge before Alderman Green. Bail set at 800 dollars. Smith jailed. His family, including Jake Sr and parents, are in the county workhouse for bawdy house charges. Smith allegedly moved frequently to dodge detection.
J R Boeback of West Pittsburg was found not guilty of surety of the peace and disorderly conduct after a jury trial that ran nearly all forenoon at Alderman Ranney s office. He was taxed about $20 costs.
The opening of the Chicago board of trade sees September wheat up five points to 93. December climbs from six to seven points, and July gains 4 1 4 cents. May nears 102 as St Louis and Midwest markets report broad increases. Winnipeg notes October wheat up six to 6 1 2 cents and December six.
Alexander of Servia and General Von Moltke would clash if Germany joins the fray. Von Moltke urges peace with Kaiser Wilhelm after talks in Berlin, while Bethmann-Hollweg pushes the emperor to settle Austro- Servian rift before it widens into war.

Detective Logan led to his lockup after a complaint about unlicensed peddling. He allegedly sold the curtains to a Beaver street woman for 75 cents. An information was filed before Alderman Hart. Washington officials said the sale of the battleships Idaho and Mississippi to Greece cannot be seen as a breach of neutrality by the United States if Europe goes to war. The Kilkis remains in American waters. the deal was considered complete when a 12 500 000 dollar payment was made. The Kilkis is being fitted at Newport News and could sail soon. Idaho was turned over at Villa Franche and midshipmen were reassigned to the Maine.
