Hastings Campaign Puts Marines Against North Vietnamese

A Marine recon unit crawled near North Vietnamese lines in Hastings and called in air and artillery strikes that UPI reports killed at least 65. Westmoreland said the action disrupted concentrations and noted the operation as highly successful. Air power also raked Viet Cong positions in heavy sorties.

Jury rules negligence in 2 deaths

Howard G. Edwards 53 of Volant RD 3 faces two counts of involuntary manslaughter over the May 13 crash on U S 422 in Union Township that killed Roscoe Bibbs Jr 31 and Joseph Robbins 32. Six coroner jurors found criminal negligence. A prior drunken driving charge against Edwards awaits court action.

North Vietnamese protest to ICC over Ky invasion call

Hanoi formally protests to the International Control Commission alleging Ky urged an invasion of the North to end the war. The dispatch also accuses U S planes of repeatedly bombing the 12 mile demilitarized zone and spraying toxic chemicals on crops and people in South Vietnam. It claims heavy losses for U S and South Vietnamese forces in the past week.

LSD sales rise in Pennsylvania says committee chair

Sen. Benjamin R. Donolow of Philadelphia noted a 60 to 70 percent rise in LSD sales and use across Pennsylvania. He cited the sharpest increases in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and said investigators will move to probe the reasons behind the surge.

State crime rate shows increase in Pennsylvania 1965

A UPI report states that 111,604 crimes were recorded in Pennsylvania in 1965 with the Middle Atlantic region up 8.5 percent. Breakdowns show murders and non negligent manslaughter 406, forcible rape 1,119, robbery 5,922, aggravated assault 8,295, burglary 47,732, larceny 23,107, and auto theft 25,123.

Pfc Threats Killed in Vietnam War After Shrapnel Wounds

Pfc George F. Threats 20 of 320 Green St. Lawrence County man killed in action in Vietnam. He served with the 2nd Battalion 32nd Artillery of the 25th Infantry. A 1965 New Castle High School graduate and co captain of the 1964 basketball team. His wife Assmneth Hannon gave birth to a son Sunday. The Rev Shepherd Threats, his father, is pastor of Ebenezer Church of God in Christ. He entered service Nov. 16, 1965 and was killed yesterday. His death confirmed by telegram to Oakdale Army detachment. A Red Cross effort aided the family during the birth.

Library board seeks three-quarter mill tax increase referendum

The New Castle Public Library board asks city council to place a ballot question at the next general election for a three-quarter mill property tax increase. Treasurer Daniel Levine presented a 700-signature petition. Council likely to act next week. The library now takes about $41,000 annually from the levy. Also, Jay Cooper, 17, sustained a right arm fracture when a jack slipped and a car toppled onto him. treated at St. Francis Hospital around 9:10 p.m.

U.S. combat deaths in Viet Nam top Revolutionary War toll

The United States reported 136 KIA last week in Viet Nam, lifting total U S combat deaths to 4,440 as of last Saturday. Casualties come largely from Operation Hastings in northwest South Viet Nam near the 17th Parallel, with Leathernecks claiming about 1,500 North Vietnamese killed.

Fishermen survive Gulf boat blaze and sinking

In a swift rescue operation 49 fishermen and two crewmen abandoned the pleasure boat White Marlin Queen after an electrical fire erupted, flames spread, and the vessel sank in 60 feet of water off Port Aransas. Coast Guard vessels and shrimp boats rescued everyone without panic.
