FBI reports crime up 6 percent across United States

The 1986 Uniform Crime Report shows a 6.3 percent rise to 13.2 million offenses the highest since 1981 with a 20 percent higher level than 1977. Violent crime up 12 percent and property crimes 6 percent, with over 20,000 murders and average citizen facing an 18 percent chance of serious crime.

Court orders fresh look on Amerikohl strip mining in Shenango

UPI reports Rear Adm. Harold Bernsen says the Navy can guard tanker convoys despite a mine blast that damaged the Bridgeton. Nurses strike at Butler Memorial Hospital prompts contingency plan

About 260 nurses from Local 705 of the Pennsylvania Nurses Association walked off after rejecting a contract. The hospital ran smoothly with emergency and outpatient services continuing while non-emergency admissions were halted and some patients were transferred. No new negotiations were scheduled as of Sunday and details of staffing or contract terms remain undisclosed.
