New York July 27 Salvatore Spitale a known Lindbergh kidnap figure appeared unsettled after his arrest on grand larceny charges The complainant Benjamin Felgenbaum reported paying $1000 for a restaurant to Spitale who claimed the money was a loan.
Velma West, known as the hammer-slayer of her husband, agrees to waive extradition to Ohio to return to the Marysville Women's Reformatory. She escaped from Marysville with three others on June 19 and expresses relief at resuming imprisonment. Companion Mary Ellen Richards also waives extradition. Richards faces a 25 year term for armed robbery. Two fugitives remain uncaptured as detectives pursue them.
Harrisburg July 27 The Pennsylvania highway department launched a WPA road improvement program to provide work for about 50 000 men. With WPA project approval in Washington the plan includes 1 000 miles of new highway and 116 miles of widening at a total cost of 8 million dollars with over 4 million from the state. The program starts as state WPA officials begin issuing one month furloughs to workers with more than 14 months on the job.
Rain disrupted New Wilmington Community Day with afternoon showers cooling events yet the program started at noon and featured a picnic lunch and races. A baseball game between married men and single fellows ended with a disputed 19 to 19 score. Johnny Engleson pitched and Shoeless Wilbur Patterson excelled for the singles while a Scout Rotary event was halted by rain. Donnie Wilson led in high points as winners were listed for races and swimming.
Tokyo officials announced a bold plan to control the western Pacific under the pretext of defending Sakhalin, forming a new squadron to blockade the Soviet portion and mobilizing with the Japanese fleets. Seven federal convicts who escaped from a Brison van after overpowering guards are believed trapped in a 20 mile square Blue Ridge area near Culpeper. Federal agents, state police, and civilian possemen surrounded the region near Rapidan and conducted bloodhound searches as blockades held roads into the mountain area and highways out of the state. The fugitives, part of 22 prisoners transferred from Atlanta to Lewisburg, include Charles F. Gale Luther Morris John Gibson Walter Smith Raymond Walker Gerald Montague and Hugh Penny, with sentences of three to five years for crimes such as interstate transportation of stolen autos post office robbery and counterfeiting.
Texas Free Democratic leader E B Germany says he will not comment immediately on John L Lewis remarks about Vice President John N Garner. Col Ernest O Thompson notes the CIO stance appears to boost Garner, hinting at sitdown tactics rather than labor support.
The United States under President Roosevelt signals a six month notice to Japan ending the 1921 commerce treaty.
