In Salamanca on July 27 a Rebel communique reported heavy gains on Madrid western front, with Brunete advances and Loyalist counterattacks repelled. The report claimed 50 Loyalist tanks destroyed, several thousand Loyalist dead, and 108 Loyalist planes shot down.
A land turtle discovered by George Foster in his Union township home yard Sunday afternoon bore carved initials W. Rea, 1921. It escaped after inspection. A separate note mentions Arthur Seamon of Washington DC finding a nest of 26 snake eggs while visiting relatives on Mount Jackson road. Stanley Martin Jr., 28, unemployed salesman and father of her child, confessed to the strangling saying she urged him to kill her and that they could not continue their affair. He told police after dawn he drove the murder weapon belt around her neck and pulled. He later drove the couple’s car to a street intersection in Flushing where he asked police for medical help for his companion. The case continues.
Harrisburg reports indicate Mercer county is chosen for the new tuberculosis sanitorium unless Butler county provides an acceptable site by 5 p.m. State officials hope Butler counts as the alternative, though the governor’s office reportedly favors Mercer. The property owner in Butler has refused to sell.
U S Marines in Peiping began hastily constructing sand barricades around the United States embassy as a precaution to protect American citizens. The Navy Department said about 700 civilians have been warned to seek refuge in the embassy if fighting reaches the inner city, with several other havens being prepared.
Hollywood reports Freddie Bartholomew may quit acting to return to England for schooling and forget pictures. His aunt Miss Millicent Bartholomew cites a salary dispute and alleged neglect of his education as motives behind the contemplated move.

In Conneaut Ohio Neil Leppala 23 was found stabbed beside a road four hours after a dispute over leaving home. Charles Leppala 52 was taken into custody for questioning after a brother reported seeing him stab Neil during the argument. A motorist found the body. Sheriff Jerry Benson moved the father to the county jail in Jefferson for questioning. Neil was brother to former Conneaut High athlete Martin Leppala.
Pennsylvania Power Company announced that the contract for the West Pittsburg seam power plant has been awarded to J. H. Utley Construction Company of Detroit. Groundwork is underway with piling to form a box foundation to protect against high water. Operations are expected to begin immediately, with the plant ready for use around November 1 next year.
Carl Richey a ten year old West Pittsburg youth attempted to mail a letter from a fire alarm box at Orchard and North Cedar streets Monday afternoon mistaking it for a mailbox. Firemen were summoned to 1909 South Mercer street at 10:30 pm by a still alarm and found rubbish burning.
Hollywood report states Claudette Colbert, film star, remains at home under orders from her husband Dr Joel Pressman due to a severe cold. The notice confirms medical advice and residence status at the new home.
John Luther Maddux, aviation pioneer and former automotive racer, died of a heart attack after a six day illness in New York. His body was to travel to California for burial as plans called for a plane funeral. He helped launch the Ford tri-motor airliner era and built airlines and flying fields.

Two persons were injured and a third knocked down in a traffic incident yesterday near Grant and Elizabeth streets. Mrs Cecil Kenfield, 76, and Kenneth White, 61, were hurt after a car driven by J.C. Day of Madisonburg struck them. A boy named Bara of 6 Oak Street was knocked down but apparently uninjured. A doctor examined the victims. Mrs Kenfield appeared uninsured.
