Darrell Mack reports in El Lago Texas as the three Apollo 11 astronauts return home. Wives Joan Aldrin Jan Armstrong and Pat Collins express joy amid heat as they recount prayers, champagne, and the President’s greeting.
Two area youths were arrested on armed robbery charges at Best Oil Co. in New Wilmington. A 16 year old was placed in juvenile detention. an adult, J. Al Lee Williamson of New Wilmington RD, is in county jail on $10,000 bond after pleading innocent. About $150 was stolen and recovered. One suspect entered the station at 5:23 a.m. with a 23 caliber rifle, demanding money from attendant Mike McConahy who yielded $3. Additional money and a locked box were taken including $53 and a $2 slip. The box with money was later found intact on Produce Street. A car matching the witness description was stopped at Moravia Street and Mahoning Avenue, yielding $72 in the car.
Delegates gather at a Holiday Inn briefing ahead of a two day conservation conference. Talks by H Beecher Charinbury and Maurice Goddard outline department roles in minerals forests and waters. A banquet at 7 p m and a tour of Western Pennsylvania projects are planned with attendees including Shafer and Brockenbrough.
In Exeter a home-built midget Mustang I airplane crashed in a backyard after takeoff from Wyoming Valley Airport killing builder John J. Pambianco of Forty Fort and passenger Jack Kendra of Kingston, both in their 30s. The craft dove into a tree two miles from the airport. no children were nearby. Pambianco, a veteran private pilot, began the project two years ago after about 2500 hours of labor and an estimated $6000 investment.
The State Public School Building Authority announced bids for a library and administration building at Butler County Community College in Harrisburg. Apparent low bids include C. T. Dumbaugh Co. for general contracting at 281611 dollars, Mechanical Craftsmen Inc for heating at 453?00, plumbing at 41550, and Puellgraf Electric Co for electrical work at 52970.
Ken Overlin, 59, former middleweight champion, was found dead in his Reno apartment after suspected natural causes. He posted a 127 13 7 career record, won the 1940 title from Ceferino Garcia at Madison Square Garden and lost it in 1941 to Billy Soose.
Richard Nelms of Highworth England says customers avoid his pub after claiming to see a ghost. He purchased a 40000 dollar ghost insurance policy on Thursday as the market reacts to spooky rumors and evolving superstition.
UPI report notes U S bituminous coal output fell to about 940000 tons for the week ending July 19 amid a miners holiday. Last year for the same period output was 6776000 tons with total year to date around 284775000 tons. Bureau of Mines data for the week ending July 12 shows 5110000 tons produced.
Three year old Mathew Durst fell from the Erie Yacht Club into Lake Erie and was pulled out unconscious. Fireman Leo Vitelli revived him with mouth to mouth resuscitation and he was admitted to Hamot Hospital for observation.
Philadelphia reports FBI agent Donald Klinger stopped a second holdup in a week as he confronted a man with a coat over his arm in Liberty Federal Savings and Mt Airy office. The suspect, Donald E. Rines, 24, fled four blocks but was caught. Klinger had earlier been auditing a 34000 robbery from July 14 and pursued another thief outside a downtown bank, recovering a bag from a ticket agent.
In Harrisburg the 1969 General Assembly recesses for a week as House Democrats prepare to vote on a 407 million tax package and related measures. Leader K Leroy Irvis warns several levies in the 340 million business and industry tax plan are in trouble, and a 3 percent credit tax on old car trade-ins faces potential defeat. If defeated, Irvis hints the House may recess through August and early September with the budget and tax issues lingering.
Attorney says appeal planned after Muhammad Clay receives maximum penalty of five years and a $10,000 fine for refusing army induction. The judge cites religious beliefs as the basis, while Clay asserts he is a Black Muslim minister.
Pat Nixon arrived in Guam with a buttercup dress after the Apollo 11 splashdown as President Nixon met astronauts aboard the USS Hornet. She toured a rehabilitation center with Gov. Camacho’s wife and planned a seven nation Manila leg of the tour aboard Air Force One.
UPI reports the Soviet Union will ship parcels posted in U.S. post offices to Moscow for airlift to Hanoi, aiding U.S. prisoners of war. State Department officials note Hanoi refuses to disclose prisoner identities or allow full family correspondence and no date is given for the promised July 4 release of three unidentified U.S. troops.
Pennsylvania state Rep. William W. Reiger proposed a congressional mileage payment for Neil Armstrong Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins as they journey to the Moon. He noted the 10 cents per mile rate PA legislators receive for travel would exceed $50,000 per astronaut.
City council last night voted to solicit interest rates from banks for a five year 120000 loan to buy major equipment. The Department of Community Affairs approved the loan. Council questioned expense cuts while the business administrator reported efforts to meet budgeted expenses and no cuts yet instituted.
A six year old city girl was admitted to Jameson Memorial Hospital with injuries after being struck by a car. Tammy Kobialka of 07 Rr. Court St had a satisfactory night with fractures of the left arm a ruptured spleen and cuts and scrapes. Police said driver Harry L Pagley of 445 N Cascade St was traveling at a slow rate of speed north on Ray St.
U S headquarters says a North Vietnamese antiaircraft unit downed an American helicopter near the Cambodian border three miles west of Saigon on a troop hauling mission. All seven Americans and two South Vietnamese aboard died. Ground fighting was limited but totals showed Viet Cong and North Vietnamese losses, with continued U S bombing runs and unit withdrawals under Nixon’s plan.
