Woman shoots priest in Los Angeles chancery office
A nearly dressed 17 year old girl held for the fatal shooting of Rev. John B. Thom at the Los Angeles Archdiocese chancery. She placed the Derringer on a table and sat calmly until police arrived. Motive unclear. Thom was acting secretary to Cardinal McIntyre. The cardinal and Thom had just returned from lunch when the shooting occurred.

British teacher jailed in Moscow for anti Communist subversion
Gerald Brooke a 27 year old British schoolteacher was sentenced to five years in a two stage regime after a show trial by the Moscow City Court. He reportedly entered the Soviet Union as a tourist last spring and was arrested in April. Brooke admitted acting as an agent for the Popular Labor Alliance an anti Communist Russian émigré group based in Western Europe. He will serve one year in prison and four years in a strict regime labor camp with potential parole after two thirds served.
