Hearings Open On Medical Aid For The Aged

Washington United Press International reports the House Ways and Means Committee opened two weeks of hearings on President Kennedy’s plan to provide hospitalization and nursing benefits for about 14 million Americans aged 65 or older. Abraham Ribicoff led off as the administration presses for a congressional showdown next year. The proposal would cover 65 plus recipients under Social Security or Railroad Retirement, offering up to 90 days hospital care and 180 days nursing home care per illness, with financing via Social Security tax on earnings beyond 5,000 dollars and a 0.25 percent rise in employer payroll tax. The plan faces strong opposition from the American Medical Association and AFL CIO allies.
