CAPTAIN JOHN H. CRAIGE argues at Potsdam that a full Soviet entry into the Far East could save American lives and shorten the war with Japan. He says Russia could allow U S air and naval forces into Nippon waters, potentially ending the conflict by early 1946 and saving billions in costs.
Chinese communique says Kweilin is within eight miles as forces repulse Japanese counter attacks northeast and northwest. Other units reach the Kwan-tung Fukien border in air pursuit toward the Swatow coast. Hankow headquarters destroyed and the Peiping Hankow rail bridge bombed. Chiang Kai-shek’s troops recapture Paishaw and push toward Liangkiane.
Local notes report ongoing home-building activity on city outskirts. The National Safety Council estimates 1944 motor vehicle crash damage at 550 million dollars. Hollyhock records rise with several plants reaching 12 to 13 feet, including plants in Garfield avenue and Mt Jackson.

Washington July 24 Under secretary of war Patterson rejected calls for furloughs of coal miners and other groups and for a general reduction in army size. He testified before the Senate Military Affairs Committee that the army must remain large to whip Japan.
Secretary Clinton Anderson announced to Washington that the government will provide 100 million extra pounds of heavy duty home laundry soap to housewives over the next year. He stated there will be no soap rationing as part of the plan and that he would not authorize such a policy.

Workmen lay inferior cin der block for the Mayor's bathhouse at the Neshannock creek pool along the stream and workers say it could be ready for occupancy this week. It will be illuminated and a small charge may be imposed for changing clothing as the recreation project proceeds.

The committee accepted with regret and his departure becomes effective October 1 as he returns to the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade as an executive staff member.
The first LST convoy from Europe was due to arrive in New York today with five transports. About 2238 troops 322 navy personnel and 274 Netherlands marines were expected to disembark for furloughs or discharge at Camp Kilmer New Jersey. A separate item notes Egyptian lawyer Feyptian Tassemi 26 received a death sentence for killing Egyptian Premier Ahmed Maher Pasha after Egypt declared war on the Axis.
Approximately 100 students enrolled for the Westminster college summer school second session which began yesterday. Over 25 courses are scheduled. Dr Virginia Everett on leave from Westminster teaches English. Everett previously led the English department at Tusculum College Tennessee. Peter M Stace a 42 year old truck driver from Columbus Ohio was fatally injured when his trailer overturned after losing control and he was crushed under the wheels.
More than 600 B-29 Superfortresses attacked Osaka Nagoya and surrounding targets in a massive daylong sweep. The unescorted raid dropped nearly 4,000 tons of explosives on industrial bases, airfields and communications hubs as Tokyo acknowledged the main force assault.
Sen. Chapman Revercomb of West Virginia indicated he would support the United Nations charter as the Senate opened its second day of debate on the world security plan. Senate Majority Leader Barkley led opening remarks and urged more talks to avoid long sessions. Revercomb said he would seek clarification during floor discussion but has "always been for a world organization."

Paris July 246 A charge that 13 of France's 19 cabinet ministers including Chief of State Marshal Philippe Petain voted for an armistice with Germany in June 1940 was made today by former premier Paul Reynaud. He described a ministers’ council split on June 15 1940 and alleged Chautemps favored seeking German terms while Petain favored leaving for Africa. Reynaud claimed to present a chart with names on each side showing the divided positions.
Washington July 24 The OPA will issue ration book No 5 starting December 3 to December 15. The new A gasoline ration book mirrors book No 4 in use but with half sheet format and smaller size. It will cover post January 1 for fuel and rationing lasting about 18 months. The final five blue stamps for processed foods in ration book 4 become valid within the war rationing system.
A large aerial moving van plane will depart New York for Los Angeles carrying the household effects of four families. The 18 500 pound load includes a plane and refrigerators aboard newly consolidated Vultee experimental chip totes as feasibility study for long distance air moving. American Airlines leased the ship for three months to research transportation of large merchandise with a shipment cost about 2700 door to door. The air option is faster but roughly 50 percent more expensive than rail, which would take about three days.
